Russian opposition figurehead Sergei Udaltsov will be moved back to detention from a Moscow hospital, a police spokesman said on Monday.
Earlier, Udaltsov’s lawyer Nikolai Polozov said his defendant would be sent to the Volga city of Ulyanovsk, where he faces charges of assaulting a protester at a demonstration.
Udaltsov, the coordinator of the opposition Left Front movement, was detained on May 9 when he tried to take part in opposition demonstrations in downtown Moscow. He was charged with defying police orders and sentenced to 15 days in detention. Later he started a "dry" hunger strike.
Doctors examined Udaltsov several times but did not hospitalize him. Later, his health deteriorated. “He cannot terminate the hunger strike on his own. He needs medical assistance,” Polozov said on Monday.
In the evening of Monday Polozov said in his Twitter: “Sergei Udaltsov has been hospitalized, he is receiving medical treatment and has terminated his hunger strike.”
However, on Tuesday doctors decided to discharge Udaltsov from hospital, police spokesman said. “I think it is too early for such a move, for six days he was on a hunger strike. It is impossible to recover one’s health in one day,” Polozov said.
In April, Anna Pozdnyakova, a 20-year-old student, claimed she was hit by Udaltsov during a protest against the establishment of a NATO transit base in Ulyanovsk. Udaltsov, who denies the charges, must appear in Ulyanovsk court for a hearing on May 16.
However, Udaltsov is not due to be released from arrest in Moscow until May 23.
