A leader of Russia’s opposition Left Front movement, Sergei Udaltsov, wrote in his Twitter on Wednesday that he was detained by police while marching in a crowd in central Moscow.

This is Udaltsov’s third detention in the past three days.

“I was detained at the Patriarshiye [Ponds], I was just pulled from the crowd. People went further, towards the Barrikadnaya [subway station],” Udaltsov said.

Moscow police said he was detained for "an attempt to take part in an unauthorized public event."

His wife Anastasia, however, wrote in her Twitter that Udaltsov was detained for disobeying police orders.

Moscow police said about 200 people were detained on Tuesday during an unsanctioned peaceful protest against Vladimir Putin’s return to presidency near the downtown Kitai-Gorod metro station, which anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny labeled an “ongoing day-and-night folk festivity’.

Opposition figureheads, including Navalny and It-girl Ksenia Sobchak were among those detained on Tuesday. Sobchak was released early on Wednesday.

A Just Russia party lawmaker Dmitry Gudkov said he was also detained, but police dismissed the information, saying that he followed a police car on his own free will, "possibly to accompany Sobchak."

After the arrests, Udaltsov invited protestors to gather at the Patriarshiye Ponds, an affluent residential area in downtown Moscow.
