Syria Opposition Hails Russia’s Efforts to End Crisis

MOSCOW, April 27 (RIA Novosti) - A delegation of Syria’s Popular Front for Change and Liberation opposition movement, currently on an official visit in Moscow, on Friday hailed Russia's effort to tackle the country’s political crisis.

“Our delegation highly appreciates Russia’s role in defending the Syrian people and averting foreign intervention," said Ali Haidar, leader of the Syrian National Social party.

Another delegation member, People’s Will party secretary Kadri Jamil, called the talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov “very fruitful”.

“It was a very important meeting showing that our positions largely coincide. We have drawn two main conclusions.”

“The first conclusion is that the elimination of the danger of foreign intervention helps reduce the level of violence. The second conclusion is that a favorable political environment is now in place for dialogue between the Syrians on ways of ending the crisis,” Jamil sai.

Moscow has twice vetoed UN Security Council resolutions over what it called pro-rebel bias since the start of an uprising against the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, but gave its full backing to UN envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan.

Annan’s universally approved peace plan came into force in Syria on April 12, though there have been reports of numerous violations of the truce by both government and opposition forces.

The UN Security Council has authorized the dispatch of 300 military observers to Syria to supervise on the ceasefire between the government and opposition forces.
