Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday he is ready to become a member of the ruling United Russia party, after being nominated for the party leadership last week by incumbent leader and President-elect Vladimir Putin.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday he is ready to become a member of the ruling United Russia party, after being nominated for the party leadership last week by incumbent leader and President-elect Vladimir Putin.

“If I receive a proposal to head the party, and the incumbent party’s leader [Vladimir Putin] has already voiced it, I will not refuse. And moreover I think that any party leader must be its member,” Medvedev said during a live televised interview with Russian journalists.

Putin who had headed the ruling party since 2008 without being its member, said on Tuesday that he would stand down as head of the United Russia party since “the president should be a non-party figure.” Medvedev is widely expected to take up the post of prime minister after Putin’s inauguration as president on May 7.

The outgoing president said although United Russia was not a perfect political force, it was objectively the most popular party.

“It is the biggest party, but I don’t say that it is the most perfect party. In perspective I see United Russia as the strong centrist conservative force which must exist in a country like Russia,” the president said.

United Russia suffered a significant slump in popularity before last December’s disputed parliamentary polls, but remains the largest party in the Duma.
