The city of Moscow may get its own top-level internet domain, having filed the application with domain name overseer ICANN on Thursday.

The city of Moscow may get its own top-level internet domain, having filed the application with domain name overseer ICANN on Thursday.

The application for the .moscow domain and its equivalent in Cyrillic cost $185,000, said the organization Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technologies and Infrastructure Development, which oversaw the request.

ICANN is running a program called new gTLD (Generic top-level domain), which will expand the current list of 22 top-level domain names such as .com and .net, allowing for virtually any number of new domains.

The deadline for applications is April 30, while the final decisions on domain assignment are expected by December 2012, allowing new domains to go online next year.

Moscow City Hall, which supported the bid for .moscow domain, said it will be a “useful tool for boosting the city's recognizability on the Internet,” the Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technologies and Infrastructure Development said on its website. No estimates are available for expected number of websites that the .moscow domain may host.
