A Vladivostok court has ordered the owner of a radioactive car to remove it from Russia, the prosecutor's office of the Primorye Territory reported on Tuesday.

A Vladivostok court has ordered the owner of a radioactive car to remove it from Russia, the prosecutor's office of the Primorye Territory reported on Tuesday.

"A secondhand Honda Fit was brought to Russia from Japan through the sea port of Vladivostok in November 2011. An inspection uncovered levels of radioactive emissions that were far higher than the acceptable level and ordered that the car either be cleaned up or removed from Russia," the prosecutor's office said, RAPSI news agency reported.

The Primorye Territory transport prosecutor's office went to court after the car owner failed to take the radioactive vehicle out of the country. The court accepted the prosecutor's office's petition in full on Tuesday.

Radioactive cars and spare parts have on occasion been brought to Russia from Japan following the accident at the Fukusima-1 Nuclear Power Station on March 11, 2011. The Japanese authorities reported in December 2011 that all the damaged nuclear reactors had been shut down.

However, it is likely to take 30-40 years to completely clean up the contamination caused by the accident and dismantle the reactors.
