Russia must have a strong rightist party to expand the political spectrum of the society, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.

Russia must have a strong rightist party to expand the political spectrum of the society, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.

The president also said he doubted whether former finance minister Alexei Kudrin was capable of creating a right-wing party in Russia.

“I believe that a strong right-wing party must be present in Russia,” Medvedev said at a meeting with his supporters. “It is a pity that in its present state such a party can barely be seen on the political horizon.”

Medvedev said that the attempts to form a right-wing party in Russia failed because of the absence of strong-minded leaders who could have garnered support of like-minded people.

Kudrin, who resigned as the country’s finance minister and deputy prime minister last year following a row with President Dmitry Medvedev over budget issues, has said he was planning to establish a new right-leaning party.

Kudrin has also supported the protest movement that swept across Russia following December 4 parliamentary elections, triggered by allegations of widespread vote fraud in support of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party.
