Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday pushed for the introduction of additional economic sanctions to help tackle poaching.

Speaking at a meeting with students from Tomsk, the Prime Minister emphasized that economic sanctions are the most effective way to reduce poaching. “Let's take caviar, for example, additional mechanisms, including economic ones, should be introduced,” he said.

“If we do not destroy poached caviar, poachers will continue selling it. Why, because organizations that control this process, including fish preservation organizations, churn it out,” Putin added.

The majority of people working in that sector are professionals who want to work within the law, he went on. “However, some ignore the rules and in fact, this is a corporation of poachers: first they seize [the caviar], others guard, third parties sell the poached goods, others are look after cash flows,” the premier said.

“We should introduce economic measures to destroy poached caviar. Otherwise, the vicious practice will never come to an end.”
