The military conflict in Libya has reached a stalemate, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday.

The military conflict in Libya has reached a stalemate, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday.

"NATO is caught in tricky situation, they have already been bombing Libya for longer than they bombed Yugoslavia...and no end is in sight," Lavrov told the Vesti-24 TV channel.

He also said the cost of the conflict in human terms was "high."

Libya has been rocked by fighting between pro- and anti-government forces since mid-February. International NATO-led military operation began on March 19 following a UN resolution and was extended until late September.

UN Security Council Resolution 1970, passed in February, prohibited states from providing any kind of arms to Libya. Resolution 1973, passed a month later, authorized countries "to take all necessary measures" to help protect Libyan civilians.
