Prosecutors in St. Petersburg said on Wednesday they will send an official warning to Russian website Fontanka.ru for posting a video of a sexual assault on a schoolboy.

Prosecutors in St. Petersburg said on Wednesday they will send an official warning to Russian website Fontanka.ru for posting a video of a sexual assault on a schoolboy.

"The warning statement has been prepared and will be handed over on Thursday," a spokeswoman for the St. Petersburg Prosecutor's Office said.

Local news agency BaltInfo said on Tuesday that several high school pupils raped a 13-year old boy on April 28 with the handle of a shovel "under the pretext of returning a non-existent debt" and posted a video of their act on the internet.

A criminal case has been opened against the defendants who are teenagers and have not attained the age of criminal responsibility.

The video was later released by some St. Petersburg media with the faces of the pupils obscured and a message warning that it was not recommended viewing.

The owners of the website must comply with the warning within a month of receipt of the document.

St. Petersburg's ombudswoman for children's rights, Svetlana Agipova, has demanded that the video be withdrawn, although there are no legal grounds to force media to remove it from their websites.
