Police in St. Petersburg said on Friday they were looking into an attack on three members of the controversial Russian art group Voina (War) by unknown assailants claiming to be police officers.

Police in St. Petersburg said on Friday they were looking into an attack on three members of the controversial Russian art group Voina (War) by unknown assailants claiming to be police officers.

The statement came after Leonid Nikolayev, Oleg Vorotnikov and his wife, Natalya Sokol, were beaten by seven men in central St. Petersburg on Thursday. Her 2-year-old son, Casper, was also injured in the attack.

Their lawyer said the men shouted "We are from the police!" seconds before the attack. "They were waving their IDs around and kicking the guys," Dmitry Dinze said.

"All three have registered complaints, and reports were also received from medical institutions," a police spokesman told RIA Novosti. "Preliminary investigations are underway."

Earlier this week, Nikolayev - a.k.a. Lyonya F**king Crazy - and Vorotnikov were freed on bail after three months in jail on charges connected with a daring stunt last September, when the art provocateurs overturned police cars in St. Petersburg.

The two face up to seven years in jail if convicted. Bail was reportedly posted by British artist Banksy, who earlier donated almost $130,000 from a print sale to the group.

Voina is notorious for radical actions including an orgy in a Moscow museum to mark the 2008 inauguration of President Dmitry Medvedev and painting a 65-meter phallus on a drawbridge opposite the St. Petersburg headquarters of the FSB, successors to the KGB.
