Russian President Dmitry Medvedev raised concerns on Wednesday over the maintenance of security in the Russian transport system.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev raised concerns on Wednesday over the maintenance of security in the Russian transport system.

"I believe that the maintenance of security in transport, not only because of the recent terrorist attack, is insufficient as a whole," Medvedev told a meeting on transport security.

Moscow is observing a day of mourning on Wednesday for the victims of the January 24 terrorist attack which claimed the lives of 35 people and left scores injured.

The president ordered an investigation into the Domodedovo airport attack and urged measures to prevent such tragedies in the future, particularly at vulnerable transport sites across the country.

Earlier on Wednesday, Medvedev sacked federal transportation security chief, Andrei Alekseyev, in the wake of the terrorist attack and warned that more dismissals would follow.

Medvedev ordered Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev to "shake up" the entire transport police to ensure daily transport security.

"If people don't understand how to work, we'll find other people," Medvedev said.

He earlier criticized airport security and said those responsible would be "punished."

Russia needs a modern color-coded security system in the transport sector similar to the systems in use in the West, Medvedev also said.
