The Russian and Abkhazian interior ministries signed on Friday an agreement on cooperation between their border agencies.

The Russian and Abkhazian interior ministries signed on Friday an agreement on cooperation between their border agencies.

This cooperation will "stabilize the criminal situation" at the two countries' border, Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said at the signing ceremony.

Agreements on the provision of pensions and insurance to officials are also expected to be signed in the near future, he said.

The creation of bilateral operative groups and the exchange of operative and statistical information between the agencies, as well as the holding of joint operations aimed at detecting militant groups are also on the agenda, he added.

Russia recognized Abkhazia and another breakaway Georgian republic, South Ossetia, following the five-day war with Georgia in August 2008 that broke out after Tbilisi attacked South Ossetia in an attempt to bring it back under central control.

Since then, only Venezuela, Nicaragua and the tine Pacific island nation of Nauru have followed Russia's lead in recognizing the two republics.
