One of Russia's most senior politicians said on Wednesday that a report alleging the involvement of the previous leadership of Russian pipeline monopoly Transneft in the embezzlement of at least $4 billion should be investigated.

One of Russia's most senior politicians said on Wednesday that a report alleging the involvement of the previous leadership of Russian pipeline monopoly Transneft in the embezzlement of at least $4 billion should be investigated.

Alexei Navalny, a minority shareholder in Transneft and well-known critic of corporate corruption in Russia, posted the accusations on his blog on Tuesday. The blog contains extracts from a report on the construction of the East Siberia Pacific Ocean (ESPO) oil pipeline compiled by the Russian Audit Chamber and allegedly concealed by the Russian leadership.

"If even a fraction of the facts are confirmed, there are bodies that must respond, like the Investigations Committee and the Prosecutor General's Office," Sergei Mironov, the speaker of Russia's upper house of parliament, told journalists in St. Petersburg.

The prime minister's press secretary Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti on Tuesday he saw "no need to comment on the blog."

"The blog refers to the Audit Chamber. Surely if there was something in it, we would have heard of it directly from there," he said.

The Audit Chamber was unable to confirm the authenticity of the reports but said it had requested the relevant documents from its archives for checking, the Vedemosti business daily said.
