Former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov has been appointed a dean of the International University in Moscow, the university said on Tuesday.

"By order of the president of the International University in Moscow... Professor Yury Luzhkov was appointed a dean of the large cities management department," the statement said.

University head Gavriil Popov served as Moscow mayor before Luzhkov. International University in Moscow (IUM) was the first private university in Russia. It was founded in 1991.

Luzhkov, 74, was fired by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last week after weeks of speculation about his worsening relations with the Kremlin and his imminent dismissal or resignation.

Luzhkov, who had been in office since 1992, vexed Medvedev by criticizing his decision to freeze construction of a new Moscow-St. Petersburg toll road and calling for stronger leadership for Russia in an article in the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper.

I was very happy to read that former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov has been appointed a dean of the International University in Moscow, the university said on Tuesday.

"By order of the president of the International University in Moscow... Professor Yury Luzhkov was appointed a dean of the large cities management department," the statement said.

Based on former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov's previous work experience over the past 18 years, he is a natural for this position.

I just knew that former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov was going to bounce back and quickly. He took is firing with dignity and pride, did not make a fuss, and moved right on with his life.

That is the text book way on how to take a job firing and turn it into a positive event.

I am sorry that Yury Luzhkov is now “dean of the large cities management department” because I probably will not be able to work with him. However this is an ideal opportunity for him.
