On September 8 wildfires crossed the Russian-Kazakh border and almost completely destroyed Nikolayevka; 1,166 people were evacuated from the village.

Some 1.4 billion rubles have been allocated to the razed village. Deputy Minister of Regional Development Konstantin Korolevsky has arrived in Nikolayevka for talks with the local authorities.

"Nikolayevka should become a model XXI century settlement," Korolevsky said. Each house will have satellite TV and will be connected to the Internet, he added.
