Residents of Central Russia's Vladimir Region, displaced by wildfires, wrote an open letter to the Russian president saying they "suffered another shock" due to rude remarks by some regional officials.

The letter quotes an article from the information portal of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, which says officials had accused the affected residents of turning the tragedy to their own profit.

"Such misconduct tarnishes [the image of] the state and officials. We ask you to give your opinion about such actions and take measures," the letter to Dmitry Medvedev, published by the Rosbalt agency, said.

A group of local residents earlier complained to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that local authorities are building "shacks, made of fire hazardous materials" to compensate for the houses they lost. The authorities subsequently announced that more rooms would be added to the houses

In an article published on September 3, the ER.RU portal quotes the Razreshite Pobespokoit newspaper, "which was earlier owned by [the region's deputy governor Alexander] Leontyev," as saying that the affected residents were "shameless scroungers."

"In the deputy governor's opinion, the principle of social justice is violated here: those who suffer from ordinary fires in cities receive miserly compensation, while wildfire victims turned tragedy to profit," the portal wrote about Leontyev, without giving his direct quote.

Forest and peat bog fires raged in European Russia in July-August. The fires killed over 50 people, and destroyed more than 2,000 homes, making thousands homeless.
