Four Russian road police officers were detained in Moscow after a man who had been reported kidnapped by his wife was discovered in their car's boot.

Four Russian road police officers were detained in Moscow after a man who had been reported kidnapped by his wife was discovered in their car's boot, a local police spokeswoman said.

The woman reported to police on Saturday that four unknown men wearing camouflage uniforms detained her husband near his house and took him away in a Ford car, Zhanna Oshimina said.

The car was detained in western Moscow soon after the incident. The man was found safe in the boot of the car, which reportedly bore a license plate stolen from another vehicle.

Just hours after the incident, Moscow road police head Vladimir Kolololtsev sacked Hamid Abdryakhimov, the public security police chief in Moscow's Northern district, Oshimina said.

"According to the detainees, they kidnapped the man being guided by their private motives," a police source told RIA Novosti.

A criminal case has been initiated over the incident.

RIA Novosti's editor-in-chief Svetlana Mironyuk said the rapid firing of Abdryakhimov showed police authorities' "intolerance towards violations of law and outrage" among police officers.

Kolololtsev was appointed the Moscow road police head after his predecessor Vladimir Pronin was fired in April 2009 over a drunken shooting spree in a Moscow supermarket, in which the former head of a Moscow police station, Maj. Denis Yevsyukov, killed three people and wounded several others.

The case sparked public outrage, which along with several other police scandals made Russian President Dmitry Medvedev launch a major overhaul of Russia's police forces in an attempt to improve their image.

In December, Medvedev ordered that the number of police personnel be reduced by 20% over the next two years, proposing the cuts be balanced by higher salaries for remaining staff. The president also urged new anti-corruption measures and tighter selection procedures.
