A bomb targeting a freight train exploded on a railway track in Dagestan in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region but no one was hurt in the explosion, the local interior department said on Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 10:05 a.m. Moscow time on Sunday on the Kaspissiky-Tarki track and targeted an eight-car freight train, the interior department said.

"The railway track is supplementary and rarely used for train traffic. According to preliminary information, there was liquefied gas in some rail cars. The explosion did not derail the train," the interior department said.

Bomb specialists check this track twice a day and apparently militants planted the bomb after a regular check, the interior department said.

Investigators are working on the scene. The scope of damage is being assessed, the interior department said.

In July, two freight trains were derailed by bombs in Dagestan. In one explosion, the train driver and his assistant were injured.

Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia's largely Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia.
