The ecological tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico shows the need to handle more responsibly environmental security issues, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday.
Medvedev said at a Global Energy Prize award ceremony the oil slick indicated a growing need to rethink cooperation norms in the energy sphere.
"The issue of ecological responsibilities of companies, of entire counties, is now more topical than ever," Medvedev said.
"We have seen what failures even the most up-to-date and, it seems, simple technology can make. It is yet another reason to begin devising new technologies and developing those we already have," he added.
Medvedev made his statement amid the ongoing clean-up procedures in the Gulf of Mexico, where a blast ripped through the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform, owned by British Petroleum (BP), in late April, causing the worst oil spill in the history of the United States.
