Russia strongly opposes the rewriting the history of World War II in attempts to fight Stalinism, the Russian foreign minister said on Thursday.

"We categorically condemn attempts to falsify history under the pretense of fighting Stalinism and attempts to lumber Russia with all the sins of European politics," Sergei Lavrov said at a plenary meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Lavrov added that young Europeans should be allowed to find out the truth about World War II and proposed that guided remembrance tours be set up around Europe.

World War II is a contentious issue in Russia's relations with Estonia and Latvia. The two Baltic States annually hold parades in honor for former Nazi collaborators.

Under former president Viktor Yushchenko, Ukraine held numerous events to honor the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which fought against the Soviets during World War II.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) passed the Lithuanian resolution last summer that blamed both Stalinism and Nazism for the outbreak of World War II.
