Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Friday for a crackdown on people who provide any form of assistance to terrorists.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called on Friday for a crackdown on people who provide any form of assistance to terrorists.

"When we are talking about such crimes, there cannot be any leniency depending on the role played," the president said at a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary parties.

"It is not important what they do - make soup or wash their clothes," he said, adding that he had discussed the issue with the North Caucasus authorities during his visit to Dagestan on Thursday.

Medvedev called on legislators to pay closer attention to the issue saying "it would make sense to touch up the legal system."

Boris Gryzlov, the speaker of the lower house of Russia's parliament and leader of the ruling United Russia party said the only way to tackle terrorists is to kill them, adding that it was "too late to rehabilitate them."

"Our response to terrorist hideouts will continue to be the same," Medvedev said, "We will carry out operations and destroy them where they are without hesitation."

Medvedev's comments come just four days after two deadly suicide bombings hit the Moscow metro, killing at least 40 people and injuring dozens more. The bombs were followed on Wednesday by more suicide attacks in Dagestan, which killed 12 people.
