A militant killed on Monday morning during a special operation in the capital of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan was the so-called "emir of Grozny," a Federal Security Service (FSB) spokesman said.
"The dead militant has been identified. He is the so-called emir of Grozny, Salambek Akhmadov. Police found a gun and a hand-made grenade in the apartment where the militant was staying," the source said.
He added that an FSB officer was injured during the operation.
Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, have seen an upsurge of militant violence lately, with frequent attacks on police and officials.
The Kremlin has pledged to wage "a ruthless fight" against militant groups but has also acknowledged the need to tackle unemployment, organized crime, clan rivalry and corruption as causes of the ongoing violence in the region.
