Avatar dominates Russian box office for 5th week

Avatar topped the Russian box office ratings for the fifth straight week, raking in almost four times the ticket sales of its nearest rival over the weekend, the Bulletin of Film Distributors reported on Tuesday.

The sci-fi blockbuster, which won James Cameron best director and best picture at Sunday's Golden Globes, took in 132.49 million rubles ($4.47 million) over the weekend, with It's Complicated trailing on 36.51 million rubles ($1.23 million).

The comedy starring Meryl Streep opened on Friday, and just beat Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes (35.8 million rubles) into third.

Avatar has taken a total of 2.53 billion rubles ($84 million) in Russia since opening on December 17.

Also opening at the weekend was Up in the Air starring George Clooney, with ticket sales of 33.69 million rubles. The top-grossing domestic movie was Black Lightning, which ranked fifth with 25.99 million rubles ($876,000).

The rest of the top 10 were Disney's The Princess and the Frog, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Daybreakers, Amelia and in 10th place a second Russian production, Schastlivy konets - Happy Ending.
