Russia is continuing to pull back its troops from the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone, a Russian Defense Ministry source said on Thursday.
MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is continuing to pull back its troops from the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone, a Russian Defense Ministry source said on Thursday.

"Russia is continuing to pull back peacekeepers and units supporting them from their positions in the conflict zone, and a convoy of vehicles earlier deployed a few kilometers from Gori moved across Tskhinvali from the administrative border with Georgia on Thursday," the source said.

Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian military's general staff, said on Wednesday that troops continued to be withdrawn from Georgia despite the tense situation in the South Ossetian conflict zone.

Russia began pulling back troops from Georgia on Monday in accordance with a six-point plan drawn up by the Russian and French presidents. Moscow has criticized Georgia for not ensuring that its troops leave the conflict zone.

Nogovitsyn said tensions in the area were being exacerbated by NATO's role in rebuilding the Georgian army and warned that the Russian military would take "appropriate measures" to neutralize such a threat.

Moscow will also insist on creating no-fly zones for Georgian aircraft and giving its peacekeepers the right to carry out reconnaissance missions, he said.

Russia has proposed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on ensuring peace in Georgia as an alternative to a Western-backed version it rejected on August 19.

The new text, put forward on Wednesday, reiterates the six-point peace plan, including the stipulation that Russia may take "additional security measures" in Georgia, while omitting any reference to Georgia's territorial integrity.
