South Ossetia was attacked by Georgian forces on August 8. The majority of residents of South Ossetia hold Russian citizenship, and Moscow launched a massive operation to expel Georgian troops from the region and to reinforce its peacekeepers.
Provincial capital Tskhinvali was left in ruins by Georgia's military offensive, while Russia says some 1,600 civilians were killed in the attack. Moscow concluded its operation to "force Georgia to accept peace" on August 12.
The convoys of vehicles have brought aid including 1,600 tons of food supplies, 521 tons of bottled water, 37 tons of medical supplies, 29 tons of medical equipment, 44 diesel generators and other essentials to the Georgian breakaway republic, the ministry's statement said.
Russia began pulling back troops from Georgia on Monday in accordance with a six-point plan to resolve the South Ossetia conflict drawn up by the Russian and French presidents in Moscow on August 12.
