MOSCOW, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 528 refugees from South Ossetia have received medical assistance in North Ossetia since Georgia's attack on the rebel republic's capital on August 8, the Russian health ministry said on Friday.

As a result of Georgia's military offensive last Friday, South Ossetia's capital, Tskhinvali, was largely destroyed. According to Russian figures, around 1,600 civilians were killed and over 34,000 fled the region, mostly to the neighboring Russian republic of North Ossetia.

"We have admitted 84 people, including 22 wounded, 55 ill people and 4 pregnant women, in the last 24 hours alone," the ministry quoted medical official Vladimir Uiba as saying.

He also said 16 people had been transferred from Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, to federal hospitals.

Valery Shabanov, a chief doctor at a field hospital in the South Ossetia capital, said 90 people had been admitted to hospital over the last 24 hours in Tskhinvali, and that 19 of them had undergone surgery.
