Medvedev to sign national anti-corruption plan in near future

15:03 12/07/2008
ZAVIDOVO (Tver Region), July 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told parliamentary party leaders on Saturday that a new anti-corruption plan will be signed in the near future.

Medvedev, a former lawyer, has made the fight against corruption one of his main goals since taking office in early May, and heads the new anti-corruption council.

"A national plan has been drawn up, and only a few minor points remain - I will sign it in the near future," the president said.

He said that main goals in stemming corruption are to improve the judiciary and penal system. He said these issues were discussed at one-on-one talks with Liberal Democratic Party Leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky and Communist Party Leader Gennady Zyuganov.

The president said that all new anti-corruption laws should be passed by the end of this year.

"I hope we will be able to do this by the end of this year, and start next year with strong laws to counter corruption," Medvedev said.

The meeting at the presidential residence in Zavidovo in the Tver Region was also attended by Boris Gryzlov, chairman of the Supreme Council of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, and Sergei Mironov, leader of the loyalist A Just Russia party.
