MOSCOW, May 25 (RIA Novosti) - A fire at Moscow's Ostankino TV tower, the country's tallest structure, has been extinguished, a spokesman for the capital's emergencies service said Friday.

"The fire was put out at 12:52 [8:52 a.m. GMT]," he said adding that no one was hurt in the incident.

The spokesman said the fire at a height of 342 meters (1,122 feet) was caused by negligence during welding, which set burning heat insulation intended for repair works and covered the area of about two square meters.

The last major fire in the Ostankino tower occurred in August 2000, when a short circuit caused a devastating blaze that killed three and led to a blackout of federal television stations lasting several days. The tower was put on the list of Russian national strategic enterprises in 2006.
