Police in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, cordoned off Wednesday the headquarters of Russian troops in the South Caucasus.
TBILISI, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - Police in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, cordoned off Wednesday the headquarters of Russian troops in the South Caucasus.

Shota Khizanishvili, head of the Georgian Interior Ministry administration, confirmed the incident but declined to give any explanation.

"The subject is important, [but] I am not authorized to make a statement," he said. "The [interior] minister will make an official statement at 7 p.m [local time 3.pm. GMT]."

The Russian headquarters also refused to comment. A duty officer said he could see the police cordon from the window but refused to elaborate.

But Russian diplomats and military have reacted to the situation. An official in the Defense Ministry said it had been informed.

"The Defense Ministry is working to clarify the situation," he said.

Ivan Volynkin of the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi said the acting commander of the Russian troops in the South Caucasus had been in the diplomatic mission, where he was informed about the police cordon. The officer left for the site to find out the details.

"We cannot say why the building has been cordoned off," Volynkin said. "The embassy is maintaining contact with the Georgian side through diplomatic notes. One such note is being drafted now. We will categorically insist that the cordon be lifted and demand an explanation."
