MOSCOW, March 2 (RIA Novosti) - At least 300 buses fueled by compressed natural gas will be operating on Moscow's public transport routes in the near future, the city's Transportation and Communications Department said Thursday.

Natural-gas buses, an environmentally friendly alternative to buses burning conventional fuels, will feature in 11 of the city's bus fleets, the department's press service said.

The first 50 gas-powered buses appeared in Moscow during 2005.

The capital is also working to increase the use of dimethyl ether as a clean-burning alternative to other automotive fuels.

Engines using the new fuel have already been developed, and 30 vehicles have undergone tests since 2004, the press service said.
