RIO DE JANEIRO, January 27 (RIA Novosti, Andrei Kurguzov) - Russia has proposed changes to Brazil's space program to make experiments in open space safer, the Brazilian Space Agency said Friday.

A team of experts from the Russian Space Agency and the Energia Rocket and Space Corporation, Russia's leading space-industry company, visited the National Space Research Institute in Brazil to test the safety of equipment and devices that will be used in experiments conducted by the Brazilian astronaut and proposed further testing of their resistance to vibration and sharp temperature changes.

The Russian and Brazilian presidents signed a contract in October 2005 to send a Brazil's first astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in March 2006.

During the $20-million mission, Lt. Col. Marcus Pontes, who was passed through NASA training in 2000, will conduct nine scientific experiments in the sphere of nano- and bio-technology and plant behavior in micro-gravitational conditions.

Under the contract, Russia is responsible the astronaut's safety during the experiments.
