Moscow will not lift its visa regime for Turkish citizens and will not ease its recommendation against tourist travel to the country despite Ankara's apology over the Su-24 downing and gradual rapprochement between the two countries, local Izvestia newspaper said Friday, citing a high-ranking Russian official.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted Russia's ban on charter flights to Turkey and ordered the government to negotiate the revival of trade between the two countries.

"The actions of the Turkish authorities over the last two days have created the prerequisites for turning the critical page of our relations. However, Turkey must carry out serious work on ensuring the safety of those arriving in the country, especially in the light of the recent tragic events in Istanbul," the source told the Izvestia newspaper.

The Russian Federal Agency for Tourism had previously said that Moscow and Ankara were reestablishing cooperation in tourism, but stressed that Russia would put special emphasis on security of Russian tourists traveling to Turkey.

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a letter addressed to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, apologized for the downing of a Russian Su-24 attack aircraft by a Turkish jet in November and extended his condolences to the family of the pilot killed in the incident.

The following day, a coordinated terrorist attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport left at least 42 people dead and more than 240 injured.
