UK Justice Secretary Michael Gove announced he would run for the position of prime minister amid David Cameron's decision to step down by October.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK Justice Secretary Michael Gove on Thursday announced his bid to become the prime minister and the leader of the country's Conservative Party.

"I have, therefore, decided to put my name forward for the leadership. I want there to be an open and positive debate about the path the country will now take," Gove said in a statement.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum on its membership in the EU. The following day, it was announced that 51.9 percent of people supported the move to leave the bloc. Cameron, a staunch supporter of the country retaining its EU membership, announced he would be resigning by October.
