UNITED NATIONS, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The current election campaign in Ukraine is cynical and unscrupulous, Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin said Friday.

"One can only feel for those in Ukraine who want a civilized development for their country, and sure there are plenty of such people. The ongoing election campaign is remarkably unscrupulous and cynical," Churkin said at a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.

According to Churkin, the political sphere in Ukraine is currently being stripped of competition.

The Russian Envoy reminded that Ukraine has recently adopted a law on lustration, or vetting of officials - "a forerunner of a large-scale 'witch-hunt'," according to Churkin. "The non-conformists are being threatened and exposed to violence," he added.

The early parliamentary elections in Ukraine will take place on October 26. Ukrainians will vote for the parliament's 424 members – 225 of them are to be elected by party lists with the election threshold set at five percent, and 199 by single-seat constituencies.

On Thursday head of the Kremlin staff, Sergei Ivanov said that Russia will recognize the parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
