MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia would welcome the United States taking steps towards the resumption of six-party talks on North Korea's controversial nuclear program, a source in the Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti Wednesday.
"We always proceed from the need to move in this direction. And if the American side takes adequate steps and makes the effort, not just claims, to North Korea to meet one-sided requirements, we will definitely welcome it," the source said.
On October 1, after talks with his North Korean counterpart Ri Su Yong in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the resumption of six-party talks on North Korea's controversial nuclear program is possible despite current difficulties.
North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in 2005 and conducted a series of underground nuclear weapon tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Pyongyang's nuclear program has triggered mass protests from the international community, including demands for the nation to return to the so-called six-party negotiations, comprising North and South Korea, Russia, the United States, China and Japan, on the reduction of its nuclear activities. Pyongyang withdrew from the talks in 2009.
