UNITED NATIONS, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations hopes the upcoming parliamentary election in Ukraine will contribute to a political settlement in the country, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said Monday.
"We very much hope that the parliamentary elections will be a step forward to the political reconciliation," Dujarric told reporters during a press briefing at the UN headquarters.
Answering a question of whether the United Nations would recognize the legitimacy of elections on the territories of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, Dujarric stated that "it is not for us to say whether the elections were legitimate or not".
On August 27, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed an executive order dissolving the country's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. An early parliamentary election in Ukraine is scheduled for October 26. The leaders of the self-proclaimed people's republics in eastern Ukraine have set their own regional elections for November 2.
