MOSCOW, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is interested in building further constructive dialogue with Germany, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his message of congratulations on the Day of German Unity sent to Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck.

“Mr Putin said that Russia seeks to develop constructive dialogue with Germany,” statement on official Kremlin’s website said.

"We hope the reciprocal Years of Russian and German Language and Literature that we are holding in our two countries will strengthen mutual understanding and trust between our nations," the Russian leader said in the message.

“The President of Russia gave a high appraisal of the great positive potential that Russia and Germany have built up in their relations and noted how important it is to preserve and build on this foundation in the current difficult period,” the statement read.

Vladimir Putin has also expressed certitude that by joint work it would be possible to expand Russian-German partnership in terms of solving relevant international problems in order to establish security and stability in the European continent and across the globe.

The Day of German Unity is celebrated annually on October 3. It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification, which was the country’s goal since the middle of the 19th century and finally achieved in 1990. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) joined the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and formed the reunited nation. From 1949 until 1990, the GDR was a part of the so-called Soviet zone, which surrounded, but did not include Berlin. The FRG, between 1949 and 1990, was a republic consisting of the western parts of modern Germany, consolidated by the United States, Great Britain, and France after the World War II.
