MOSCOW, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - The Catalan regional government announced Tuesday that they would appeal the Monday decision by Spain’s Constitutional Court to suspend Catalonia’s decree to hold an independence referendum on November 9 (N9), EFE Spanish news agency reported Tuesday.
“We are in a context where the process is not finished, and we are not going to overlook the situation, we are going to continue [appealing the suspension] and we will accomplish what we have compromised in accordance with the law,” the spokesman for the Catalan government, Francesc Homs, was quoted as saying at a press conference, adding that “the game goes on”.
Catalan pro-sovereignty and pro-independence parties and civil society groups urged the citizens on Tuesday evening to demonstrate in support of the non-binding N9 referendum.
The campaign was organized by the Pro-independence associations Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Òmnium Cultural.
However, Catalan leader Artur Mas, called for the campaigns to be suspended for the citizen’s safety but said that Monday’s suspension did not imply that the non-binding referendum was illegal, according to Nationalia Ciemen online journal report published on Tuesday.
The Advisory Council for the National Transition (CATN) further argued that Catalonia could still hold the referendum using a snap election known as the “plebiscite election”.
In this kind of election the “political parties contested the seats with the fundamental political goal of obtaining a clear statement from the electorate on Catalan independence” Nationalia cited CATN as saying adding that this kind of alternative would allow for a negotiation with the Spanish government over the implementation of independence.
Artur Mas signed a decree on Saturday for an independence referendum following poll results showing favor for Catalonia's independence. The polls were held after Scotland’s independence referendum on September 18, even though Scotland voted to remain part of the United Kingdom.
