UN, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told journalists Friday his country would oppose any move to change the existing veto rules in the UN Security Council, although it would support reforms in the organization.
Talks on the Security Council reform must continue, but we are against any kind of change to the veto right, Vitaly Churkin said.
Churkin's deputy Alexander Pankin reiterated the concerns voiced by the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, asking what mechanism the UN Secretary General would resort to in order to limit a UNSC member state's right to use veto.
Pankin also reminded the audience that the right of veto had previously prevented the United Nations from making "ill-conceived decisions."
Reports transpired earlier that Poland had been seeking to limit Russia's veto right in discussions concerning the Ukraine crisis.
Russia holds veto power as a permanent UN Security Council member, as do China, France, Britain and the United States. In 2013, Moscow and Beijing already used their veto right to block a US-drafted UN resolution that cleared the way for attacks on Syria.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was reported as saying however that veto was not a privilege.
