MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - US military action in Syria is contrary to international law and must be stopped by the European community, a Russian senator said Wednesday at a conference held in the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency headquarters.

"Today … the Americans are once again carrying out airstrikes on Syrian territory within the framework of their global supremacy policy, violating the system of international law – this is a bad precedent. And we, along with our European colleagues, must stop this," Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on international relations of the upper house of the Russian parliament, said.

The senator also stressed that even fighting international terrorism must be maintained under international legal regulations.

"We must only oppose international terrorism together, otherwise we will get the transfer of these [terrorist] principles and methods to our [own] territories – to Paris, to Moscow, to London, to New York," Morozov stated.

The Islamic State (IS) insurgent group has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria and proclaimed a caliphate state in June. Following the group's rapid advance in northern Iraq, Washington launched airstrikes against the IS fighters on the Iraqi territory in August.

Earlier this week, the United States and its Arab allies started carrying out airstrikes against various terrorist groups in Syria. Washington said it had notified Syria about the strikes in advance; however, it had not requested Damascus' permission for military action.
