PARIS, September 23 (RIA Novosti) – French President Francois Hollande discussed Iran's nuclear program with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"The President of the Republic [of France] hoped that the negotiations [on Iran's nuclear issue] can come to a resolution quickly. He reiterated the position of France: Iran must implement concrete measures to demonstrate in a certain and verifiable way that it will not acquire a military nuclear capability," a statement from Hollande's office said.

"The two Presidents also discussed the situation in Iraq, Syria and the region and exchanged views on how to fight against terrorism," the statement added, noting that the two leaders also examined prospects of bilateral cooperation that would open when confidence is restored with regard to the nuclear issue.

More than 140 heads of state and government gathered in New York City Tuesday for the 69th annual United Nations General Assembly.

The agenda of the summit is topped by the issue of the rising terrorist threat in Syria and Iraq that are currently fighting the Islamic State (IS) militant group, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS).

Other topics on the agenda of the UN General Assembly include the issue of nuclear disarmament, the Ukrainian conflict, and the Ebola virus outbreak.
