Scotland's island council area of Orkney has become the second to say "no" to Scottish independence, the official results showed according to the Council Region of Orkney.

MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - Scotland's island council area of Orkney has become the second to say "no" to Scottish independence, the official results showed according to the Council Region of Orkney.

The overwhelming majority of 67.2 percent voted "no," with only 32.8 percent voting to leave the United Kingdom.

"No" won by 10,004 to 4,883. The turnout was at a record 83.7 percent.

Polls closed at 10 p.m., with the final announcement due after 6:30 a.m. local time on Friday.

On Thursday, people in Scotland were voting in the historical independence referendum. Voters were given a ballot paper with the question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?" and the "Yes" or "No" options.

If the majority of Scots vote "yes" in the referendum, then on March 24, 2016, Scotland will become independent from the United Kingdom.
