Scottish tennis star Andy Murray openly expressed his support for his country's independence early Thursday as the historical referendum began.

MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - Scottish tennis star Andy Murray openly expressed his support for his country's independence early Thursday as the historical referendum began.

"Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. excited to see the outcome. lets do this!" Murray wrote on Twitter.

Polling stations for the referendum on Scottish independence have opened in Scotland at 07:00 a.m. BST (06:00 GMT) and will remain open till 10:00 p.m. BST (21:00 GMT) on Thursday.

The first results are expected to come in in the early morning on September 19.

If the majority of Scots vote for independence in the referendum, then on March 24, 2016, Scotland will secede from the United Kingdom.

27-year-old Murray is a professional tennis player and British number one since 2006. He is currently ranked number 12 in Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking. At his career peak, he was ranked number 2. Murray has 28 career titles, including two Grand Slam titles – the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013.

Several other celebrities have expressed their support for Scottish independence, including actors Sean Connery, Gerard Butler and Alan Cumming.
