Russia's President Vladimir Putin and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso have underlined the need to strictly observe ceasefire in Ukraine, the Kremlin press service said in a statement Monday.

MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso have underlined the need to strictly observe ceasefire in Ukraine, the Kremlin press service said in a statement Monday.

"While sharing their opinions on the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, V.V.Putin and J.M.Barroso underlined the need of strict ceasefire observance," said in the statement.

Barroso insisted on the completion of the 12-point ceasefire plan that was agreed on in Minsk, with the steps facilitating political and peaceful resolution of the conflict, while fully complying with Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, said in the European Commission's communique.

On September 5, the Contact Group on Ukraine, comprising the representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), held a meeting in Minsk, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement between Kiev and independence supporters in eastern Ukraine.

An armed confrontation in eastern Ukraine began in mid-April, when Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters, who refused to acknowledge the new government instated after the February 22 coup.
