MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to further assist peace process in eastern Ukraine during phone talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday, the Kremlin said.

“Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to assist in peaceful resolution of the crisis,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The presidents also agreed to continue the work on controversial issues related to Ukraine’s European integration, the statement said.

The previous phone conversation between the Russian President and his Ukrainian counterpart took place on Monday. Then the two presidents also discussed the necessary measures for the resolution of the ongoing Ukrainian conflict

Since mid-April the Ukrainian government has been conducting a military operation against independence supporters in eastern Ukraine, who refused to recognize the new government that came to power after a coup in February.

Moscow has repeatedly urged the Ukrainian government to put an end to the conflict.

On September 3, Putin outlined a seven-point plan for the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine, calling on Kiev to withdraw troops from the southeastern regions of the country and urging the militia to cease military advances. The plan also includes proposals for an international monitoring force, the establishment of a humanitarian corridor, a ban on the use of combat aircraft over urban areas, an exchange of prisoners in an "all for all" format and direct repair-crew access to destroyed infrastructure in the war-ravaged areas.

On September 5, the representatives of Kiev and the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk agreed to a ceasefire at the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukrainian reconciliation in Minsk.
