MOSCOW, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the organization welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plan on the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine as an effort to solve it peacefully.

“On the so-called [Putin’s] peace plan, let me stress that we welcome all efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Ukraine,” Rasmussen said.

However, he added that, “We continue to call on Russia to pull back its troops from Ukrainian borders, stop the flow of weapons and fighters into Ukraine, stop the support for armed militants in Ukraine and engage in a constructive political process.”

Speaking about NATO’s cooperation with Ukraine, the secretary general said he would have a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on September 4 and they would adopt a joint declaration and outline specific steps needed to enhance the NATO-Ukraine partnership.

Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement in the Ukrainian crisis and has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Putin presented a seven-point plan to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, urging Ukrainian forces to withdraw and cease its advance. The plan also covers the participation of an international monitoring force, the establishment of a humanitarian corridor, the ban on the use of combat aircraft over urban areas, the exchange of prisoners and access to destroyed infrastructure for repair crews.
