The self-proclaimed eastern Ukrainian regions of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics have called on Kiev to grant amnesty to political prisoners, militia, as well as politicians, deputies and Cabinet members of the republics during talks in Minsk on Monday.

LUHANSK/DONETSK, September 1 (RIA Novosti) – The self-proclaimed eastern Ukrainian regions of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics have called on Kiev to grant amnesty to political prisoners, militia, as well as politicians, deputies and Cabinet members of the republics during talks in Minsk on Monday.

“The president, government and Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine must accept in accordance with the spirit and letter of the Geneva Accords the legal acts guaranteeing…unconditional amnesty to political prisoners and members of the people’s militia, as well as political figures, deputies, government workers and other structures of the People’s Republics,” a joint republic statement reads.

On April 17, senior diplomats from Russia, the United States, the European Union and Ukraine met in Geneva to devise a road map, which called for an end to the violence in the region and the immediate establishment of a national dialogue between the state authorities and independence supporters.

The Geneva agreement also ensured amnesty for all those involved in the fighting.

However, the Geneva accords did not stop Kiev from proceeding with its military operation against independence supporters in the southeast of Ukraine, which has already claimed lives of more than 2,500 people.

Moscow has repeatedly called on Kiev to stop the bloodshed and follow its commitments under the Geneva agreement.
