MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) - Syrian President Bashar Assad has sworn in the country’s new government at a ceremony in Damascus, PressTV reported Monday.

At a ceremony held Sunday, Assad urged the ministers to “provide a new vision” and to avoid “the negatives of the previous stage,” adding that the success of the new government will depend on “earning the trust of citizens through transparency and credibility.”

The new Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi, includes 11 newly appointed ministers.

In June, Bashar Assad was reelected as Syrian president with 88.7 percent of the vote.

The Syrian Army has been fighting multiple groups of rebels, including foreign contractors, since March 2011. According to the latest figures by the UN’s human rights office, the civil war in Syria has claimed more than 191,000 lives. And according to the UN’s refugee agency, more than 3 million Syrians have become refugees and over half of the country’s population has been displaced since the beginning of the conflict.
