MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union leaders will not decide on further measures against Russia at a EU summit in Brussels, Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb said Saturday.

"We will not decide on any new sanctions today," Stubb said in an interview with YLE public radio.

"There are countries that want to toughen sanctions right away, and countries that want a more calm approach," the Finnish prime minister added.

On Saturday, the European Council is due to meet in Brussels to appoint senior positions and discuss further economic sanctions against Russia over Ukraine.

Relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated in regard to the situation in Ukraine. The West has repeatedly accused Russia of building up forces on its border with eastern Ukraine and supplying independence supporters with weapons, a claim Moscow has rejected.

In late July the EU and the US proceeded from individual sanctions imposed on a number of people and companies to penalties on whole sectors of the Russian economy. In response, Russia limited food imports from countries that imposed sanctions on it, namely the US, the EU states, Canada, Australia and Norway.
